Historic L&N Railroad Depot
Originally constructed near the intersection of 2nd Street South and Railroad Alley, near the location of the Oneonta Public Library, a present day Historical Marker stands where the large wooden structure once resided. The Railroad Depot has been relocated and restored to welcome visitors and families and now host the Blount County Chamber of Commerce and also serves as a Community Civic Center to host many events. The L & N Railroad is a 118-year-old structure that served as Oneonta's train depot until 1951. It was moved from its original location downtown in 1977 to the Oneonta Recreation Park and was renovated in 2000. It is currently available to rent for parties, receptions, family reunions and other functions. It is $125 to rent and there is a $500 refundable deposit. Located 1.5 mi. from U.S. 231 in Blount County, this one-span town bridge was built in 1930. All 95 feet of its single span are preserved for enthusiastic back-wood travelers or for those searching for treasure of a nostalgic era. Admission is free.
Built in 1935, this is one of the highest covered bridges in the nation, standing at 70 feet above the Black Warrior River. It is also one of three which still exist in Blount County, Alabama's Covered Bridge Capital and home of the Covered Bridge Festival each fall. Admission is free.
A County Older than the State
This historical marker erected in 2006 by the Alabama Historical Association reads, "A County Older Than the State, created Feb. 7, 1818 by Alabama Territorial Legislature from lands ceded by the Creek Indian Nation. Named for Tennessee Governor W.G. Blount, who sent militia under Andrew Jackson to punish Creeks for Fort Mims massacre. Jackson fought and won the Creek War. Creeks gave up half of their lands in Treaty of Ft. Jackson, 1814. Some of Jackson's men were first settelers of Blount. The County Seat was moved here (Oneonta) in 1889.
Every year in October, Blount County has a Blount County Covered Bridge Festival located downtown Oneonta in the center of all the businesses. Limestone Springs Golf Club, located at 3000 Colonial Drive, Oneonta, has a 18-hole golf-Par 72 course, 225 acres of the Appalachian Mountains and stretches almost 7,000 yards from the back tees. Heritage Golf Course, located at 1364 Heritage Road, Oneonta, has a 18-hole-Par 71 and 6,388 yards. Heritage lies in a beautiful, serene valley in Oneonta guarded by Appalachian Mountain Chain. The Blount County-Oneonta Agri-Business Center has many events throughout the year. The Blount County Fair, Agri-Business Center Pro Rodeo, Motocross, Kids Day on the Farm and Horse Shows is just a few of the events. The Blount County Farmers Market is open from June until October at the Blount County-Oneonta Agri-Business Center, which is located at 500 New Street, Oneonta.
Woodland Park is located on Jack Fendley drive across from the old police department. The park is a great place to host birthday parties, family reunions, and any other small event. Oneonta Recreation Park
Blount County Memorial Museum has been opened since 1970. The museum has many displays of the history of many families, photos, books, war veterans and the Covered Bridges in Blount County. Oneonta Public Library provides a place for everyone in your family to go to enjoy a good book to read, to help kids having to do research papers for school, audio books to listen to, DVD’s and children’s VHS tapes to watch and a sizeable Spanish section. Oneonta City Pool
Oneonta City Pool is located on State Highway 75. The pool offers a small kiddy pool along with a fun frog slide and an adult pool with spiral slide. The Oneonta City Pool hosts a swim team. Reservations can be made for birthday parties and other events. Please call the City Hall at 205-274-2150.
Oneonta Senior Center
The Oneonta Senior Center is located at 101 1st Street South, Oneonta and is open Monday-Friday 7:00 am- 2:30 pm. The Daily Activities at the Senior Center are Bingo, Cards, TV, Movies, Arts, Crafty Dominos, Puzzles and Computer Games. Adult Day Health 7:00 am-2:30 pm, Twice Weekly P.A.C.E. exercises, Once-A-Month celebrate birthdays monthly, Nurse (Health Screening-Blood Pressure, Dietary), Spring and Summer day trips, Special Events celebrate all holiday's, Oneonta Senior Center serves food to the home bound elderly people within a 3 mile radius of the center.
Blount County Veteran's Memorial
Dedicated by local Veterans Organizations, this granite memorial located in front of the Blount County Courthouse reads, " Dedicated to and in honor of all veterans of Blount County who served our country and in memory of those named here who paid the supreme sacrifice so that we might enjoy freedom".
Flame of Freedom
The historical marker reads, "Dedicated to the Gallant Men and Women of Blount County who , in the service of their country, made the supreme sacrifice for the cause of liberty and freedom. As this flame glows in the eyes of men may the memory of those who have died for freedom glow eternally in the hearts of the living. August 26, 1970, American Legion Post 72, Oneonta, Alabama. Located in front of the Blount County Courthouse.
